Most people still believe child marriage is something that happens “somewhere else.”Something far away, foreign, distant, unthinkable.
But the truth is stark:

Between 2000 and 2021, at least 315,000 children were legally married in the United States.
Most of them girls. Most of them married to adult men.
This is not a cultural relic. This is not old data. This is happening now.
Today, child marriage is still legal in 34 states.
Four states, California, Mississippi, New Mexico, and Oklahoma don’t even specify a minimum age.In theory, a child of any age can be married there, if a judge or parent approves.
This is not protection. This is permission.A legal loophole large enough to swallow entire childhoods.
The Loopholes People Don’t Know About
Child marriage creates pathways that predators exploit and the law excuses.
Here’s what the average American doesn’t realize:
1. Marriage can override statutory rape laws.
In many states, sex that would be a crime outside marriage becomes legal inside it.
A marriage certificate becomes a shield for the abuser.
2. Children cannot easily escape these marriages.
Minors generally cannot:
File for divorce
Sign a lease
Enter a shelter
Hire a lawyer
Open a bank account
Access most protections adults rely on
They are trapped in a contract they cannot legally dissolve.
3. Judicial consent is often arbitrary.
A single judge, with personal biases and zero training on coercion, can decide a child’s future in minutes.
4. Parental consent is not always protective.
Many parents force, pressure, or manipulate children into marriage, often for religious, cultural, economic, or reputational reasons.
I know this firsthand.
Why This Matters to Me and Why It Should Matter to You
When I was thirteen, after surviving a violent rape, my parents decided the solution was to marry me off. They believed this was “for the best.”
I didn’t understand marriage.I didn’t know the man.I didn’t have a voice.
And the law had nothing to say on my behalf.
When I see people minimizing the issue of child marriage today, I see the same indifference that nearly took my life.
Child marriage is not about “culture.”It is about control. It is about power. It is about stripping a child of her future and calling it tradition.
America is not exempt from this harm.We are producing our own survivors, our own lost childhoods, our own versions of me.
If the Government Will Not Protect Children, Then We Must
This is where the idea of “it takes a village” becomes more than a phrase. It becomes an obligation.
If we truly are “we the people,” then the responsibility falls on us when the system fails. We must use our voices, our votes, our outrage, and our compassion to protect those who cannot protect themselves.
That is not radical. That is human.
Your Call to Action This Week
Here is one small, real step you can take that genuinely helps:
Find out if child marriage is legal in your state.
Just Google:“Child marriage laws [your state]”or respond to this post and I’ll tell you.
If your state still allows it, even with “exceptions” write one email to your state representative this week asking them to support a ban.If you don’t know what to say, I will give you the exact script.
This is how movements start:One informed voice at a time. One refusal to look away. One choice to protect a child you may never meet.
Do not let cruelty become normal.Do not let injustice become routine. And above all, do not let children pay the price for adult complacency.
We can change this.We must change this. And that change begins with us.
Help me put an end to this human rights abuse!
